Yesterday Matt wasn’t feeling well and was exhausted all day. He came home from work, showered quickly and sat down to eat and got a call. *sigh* He was out for a few hours on the call and then came home and crashed. This morning he still felt really blah and lethargic. When it was time to leave he couldn’t find his keys.
Driving through Montgomery, AL we came to an intersection. I looked up and exclaimed , “Hey! Madison Avenue!”
Matt looked around and said, “Yeah…and Ripley. (pause) Believe it or not.”
Anyway, I was thinking…what’s that song about? Basically, if this person had a hammer he or she would be using it all the time..and for what? “To hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters all over this world.”
And at the end the song says I HAVE A HAMMER. So I’m thinking it means if you’ve got something use it, use it often and use it for the Greater Good, and by the way? We’ve ALL got SOMETHING.
Tomorrow the United States will recognize National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD). Launched by the Office of Women’s Health, NWGHAAD is a nationwide observance that encourages people to take action in the fight against HIV/AIDS and raise awareness of its impact on women and girls.
Today we are painting the blogosphere red and instead of being funny or emotional or…inserting my personality into this I’m simply going to send you to HIV/AIDS 101 (click that link!) because seeing cold, hard stats can better bring the point home.
Join us tomorrow and ROCK THE RED PUMP or flats or sneakers or boots. If you’re near local events, please attend. Tomorrow, post pics of your red shoes on your FB page or Twitter account.
Raising awareness is the first step. It leads to obliteration.
For as much as we think bad things about America, For as much as I find myself wondering if we are still the most prosperous country, for as much as I find myself wondering why people are still (in this day and age!) so eager to come to America “for a better future” or “for more opportunity”…. for all our failings. We have hope. We have possibility. We have ability if only we reach down and use it.
We should find ways to reach back in time and once again become a nation ruled by its people. A nation filled with rational, compassionate and passionate rebels who would rather stand for what is right than face letting injustice prevail. A nation of people who, rather than kowtow or be persecuted for insisting on living the way they believed was right, picked up and moved into the unknown half a world away and started their own darn nation.
Because they could.
Yet, today…half a world away…things are worse than the average American citizen can grasp. American foreign policy has evolved to the point where we no longer involve ourselves if there is no economic gain. Like the lion in the tale of the lion and the mouse…we see small third world countries and say “Why should I spare you? What could you possibly ever do for me?”
What we no longer understand is that we are still human. These people may live differently. They may look different. They may think differently…but they aren’t so different that we should be able to dismiss them.
I have a conscience. Do you?
